Two Year Olds

The Two-Year Old program at La Luz ECC features a ratio of six children for each teacher. The group size for two-year olds is twelve children.

Infant and Toddler Program Introduction

Baby and toddler development is rapid, and healthy progress is dependent on caring relationships with a few adults. Our children spend their first three years with the same teachers and the (mostly) same group of children to prevent the disruption of these early key relationships. Children change rooms, but not teachers, once each year in August. Infants, ones and twos each have their own rooms and their own outdoor playgrounds designed to be safe and appropriate for that age. Group sizes and child to adult ratios are low to reduce stress and allow plenty of individual attention. La Luz ECC features the following ratios and group sizes in the infant and toddler program.

Group Name

Ages

Group Size Child to Adult Ratio Maximum Enrollment
Infants 6 Weeks to 1 Year

One-Year Olds 12 to 24 Months 9 4.5:1 18
Two-Year Olds 24 to 36 Months 12 6:1 24

Our teachers have specialized training in infant/toddler growth and development and in working with families. Parents are welcome to come in anytime, and we encourage you to set aside a regular time each month to spend in your child’s room. Areas for breastfeeding are available so mothers can be with their children anytime. We talk with, hold, sing and respond lovingly to your child. Routines of feeding and diaper changing are occasions for positive interaction and nurturing. Reading books is an important part of each day.

Two-Year Old Program Description

Older toddlers are taking a more sustained interest in their peers, and their play grows in complexity. Language skills and vocabulary continue to grow at an astonishing rate, and this facilitates peer interactions. We have two classrooms for older toddlers, each with 12 children and two teachers. The children will have had the same teachers since infancy.

Teachers pay special attention to the way they speak with young children in order to head off potential problems, help children identify their feelings, and problem solve with children when contentious situations arise. We use active listening to make sure children are heard and feel understood. As in the one-year old classrooms, there will be duplicates of the more popular toys to prevent undue frustration. Activity areas include a cozy library, dramatic play and dress-up, art, music, blocks, puzzles and table toys, as well as plenty of space indoors and out for moving. The older toddlers have their own playground space with swings, sand for digging and a trike path. In addition to the library area, books are placed next to other interest areas. For example, the play kitchen includes recipe books and next to the toy cars and trucks are books about vehicles.

Many children are becoming interested in toilet learning at this age. When you feel your child is ready for this, we will support your efforts in a loving, matter-of-fact way. The bathroom for the older toddlers has child-sized toilets so children are more comfortable.

As in all our programs, parents are invited to drop in anytime, and we hope you will make spending a morning or afternoon here with your child a monthly or more frequent event. Over the summer, the children will have a gradual introduction to the 3-5 year-old program, which they will join in August. For the first time they will have new teachers, and their teachers will begin a new rotation with our youngest students.

The Two Year Old Room features more than 60 square feet per child, which exceeds the NAEYC recommended minimum of 50.  With a large space, and the very low ratios planned for this program, it is expected that La Luz ECC these children will enjoy time free of tears, and full of security, calmness, and developmentally appropriate stimulation.
