One Year Olds

The One-Year Old program at La Luz ECC features a ratio of four and one half toddlers for each caregiver. The group size for one-year olds is nine toddlers.

Infant and Toddler Program Introduction

Baby and toddler development is rapid and healthy progress is dependent on caring relationships with a few adults. Our children spend their first three years with the same teachers and the (mostly) same group of children to prevent the disruption of these early key relationships. Children change rooms, but not teachers, once each year in August. Infants, ones and twos each have their own rooms and their own outdoor playgrounds designed to be safe and appropriate for that age. Group sizes and child-to-adult ratios are low to reduce stress and allow plenty of individual attention. La Luz ECC features the following ratios and group sizes in the infant and toddler program.

Group Name

Ages

Group Size Child to Adult Ratio Maximum Enrollment
Infants 6 Weeks to 1 Year

One-Year Olds 12 to 24 Months 9 4.5:1 18
Two-Year Olds 24 to 36 Months 12 6:1 24

Our teachers have specialized training in infant/toddler growth and development and in working with families. Parents are welcome to come in anytime, and we encourage you to set aside a regular time each month to spend in your child’s room. Areas for breastfeeding are available so mothers can be with their children anytime. We talk with, hold, sing and respond lovingly to your child. Routines of feeding and diaper changing are occasions for positive interaction and nurturing. Reading books is an important part of each day.

One-Year Old Program Description

These little explorers are mastering walking and beginning to use expressive language. They are starting to assert themselves and exhibit more physical confidence. Our young toddlers enjoy a group size of nine, with two teachers. We have two young toddler groups, each with its own room. Individual rhythms for eating, sleeping and diaper changing will be respected, with plenty of attention paid to each child’s temperament, interests and developmental requirements.

Children who were in our infant program will have the same teachers and group, and all will move to the young toddler rooms together. A separate play yard just for this age group is adjacent to the classroom. There is a place for low ride-on toys, safety swings and space to move, move, move! Balls are a great favorite at this age, as are push toys.
Young toddlers love to imitate the adult action going on around them, so we have props for the beginnings of dramatic play, as well as blocks, soft baby dolls, simple puzzles, music and musical instruments, art supplies, of course books, and a rotating assortment of toys. Because toddlers are not expected to be able to share, many toys are duplicates. Children can enjoy a side by side play experience without the frustration for which they haven’t the maturity to cope.

The La Luz ECC facility has been designed with a homelike feel that we hope provides a comfortable environment for breastfeeding moms to drop by during the day to nurse their babies. The One Year Old room features more than 70 square feet per child, which far exceeds the NAEYC recommended minimum of 50. With a large space, and the very low ratios in this program, La Luz ECC toddlers enjoy time free of tears, and full of security, calmness, and developmentally appropriate stimulation.
